Above are just some of the coaches previously owned by Smiths Motors

Smiths Motors began in the late 1950's when the original owner, Fred Sterry, who was a milkman at the time bought a Bedford SB5 forty one seater coach to operate a school contract due to the closure of the Ledbury based coach operators Hastlelows where Fred also drove part time in the afternoons.

Fred slowly increased his fleet and appointed a manager, Harold Smith, who helped him run the expanding coach business from a quarry on Worcester Road, Ledbury.

In the 1960s the acquisition of Morris Coaches of Hereford took place and both businesses were run until it was decided to move the Hereford based coaches to Ledbury and new premises at the Homend were purchased and still remain the depot of the firm today.

In 1970 Fred was joined by his son Mike who took over as Managing Director in 1984 when the firm became limited. Fred continued to drive on School contracts until his retirement in the early eighties. Fourteen coaches and minibuses were operated on a mixture of school contracts, private hire and local bus services. Mainly Fords and Bedfords were operated in the 70s and 80s with Volvos and Dennis' replacing them in the 90s.At this time the paint scheme of the coaches was changed to the unique livery that you see today; white paintwork embellished with bold Smiths of Ledbury branding and stripes of Hereford green, Monza red and Lagoon blue.

The third generation of the Sterry family was introduced to the business in 2003 when Mike's eldest daughter Claire joined the company.

In late 2008, Mike decided to retire, handing back the company's remaining contracts. Retirement wasn't, however, to Mike's liking and in 2009 Mike and Claire re launched the business concentrating on corporate work and private hire with a pair of brand new Plaxton Profile bodied Volvo B7Rs as the core element of the revitalized operation. In 2010 a brand new BMC Karisma was purchased to replace the 35 seater MAN Caetano Algarve, continuing Smiths commitment to supplying quality modern vehicles to their customers.
